A piece of the (R)PIE: Up-leveling strategic PR planning

Event Summary

Successful public relations campaigns are built upon effective strategic planning. But what does that level of planning look like? And is it possible in such a reactive profession?

This is where the RPIE process can help! Join us for this workshop to learn how each step – research, planning, implementation, evaluation – can ensure your PR plans:

  • Include measurable objectives
  • Are grounded in research
  • Can be evaluated to track ROI

Because strategic planning is so critical in public relations, questions on the RPIE process take a significant portion of the APR examination. By joining this workshop, you’ll get a close look at successful ways to leverage RPIE to help you start preparing for your APR!

Christopher Wilson

Christopher Wilson teaches in the Public Relations sequence in the School of Communications. He received a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Florida (2014). He received an M.A. (2009) in mass communications and a B.A. (1999) in communications from Brigham Young University. Wilson worked as a public relations professional for 12 years. From 1999 through 2004, he worked in a variety of public relations capacities for West Valley City, Utah’s second-largest city. From 2004 to 2011, he worked as the public relations manager for the BYU Museum of Art, the best-attended university art museum in North America. Wilson has taught the introduction to public relations and public relations writing and production courses. His research interests focus on public relations management and strategy.

He has published in the Journal of Public Relations Education, the Journal of Communication Management, Public Relations Review, and the Public Relations Journal. He has won top paper awards for his research from the International Institute for Public Relations Research Conference and the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Jyl Hall

Jyl Hall, the director of public relations for Utah Tech University, has a decade and a half of experience as a communicator and understands both sides of the publicity dynamic from having worked on both sides. Jyl started her career in the newspaper business, first as a copy editor and later as the feature section editor. After six years as a journalist, Jyl transitioned to public relations in the higher education sector at Utah Tech University, where she has been on the University Marketing & Communication team since 2014.

A native of Kansas and an alumna of the University of Kansas, Jyl most definitely has red sand in her sequined shoes nowadays.

Jyl and her husband, Aaron, love to travel and have endured torrential downpours at the Colosseum, swam with stingrays in Barbados, partook in a picnic in Dublin while wearing a leprechaun disguise, barely survived the most turbulent ride on a Mexican ferry, and petted kangaroos, wallabies, and kolas in Sydney. Their latest adventure is raising their exuberant, inquisitive daughter.

When not playing with her sweet daughter, Jyl loves to bake cookies, cupcakes, and anything that involves chocolate. She enjoys justifying her hoarding habit by creating craft projects out of collected treasures and copious amounts of glitter.
